The Seagull

directed by Ruby Large and James Pennington

A successful actress visits her brother's isolated estate far from the city, throwing the frustrated residents' unfulfilled ambitions into sharp relief. As her son attempts to impress with a self-penned play, putting much more than his pride at stake, others dream of fame, love, and the ability to change their past.

Rather than portraying differing locations, sound was used to differentiate times of day and weather throughout the play. Since the set was minimalistic, rich and detailed soundscapes helped to establish location.

As well as soundscapes and effects, I was given the opportunity to compose diegetic music for the character of Konstantin to play. The piece is a bittersweet Romantic-style Waltz which exemplifies Konstantin’s emotional anguish when his desired affection or approval isn’t received.
