The 39 Steps
directed by Tommy Haines
A man in London tries to help a counter-espionage agent, but when the agent is killed and the man stands accused, he must go on the run to save himself and stop a spy ring that is trying to steal top-secret information. The 39 Steps is a farcical parody of the 1935 film of the same name.

Due to the fast-paced nature of the play and the many locations within the story, sound design played a large role in establishing the setting . This is particularly prevalent in the theatre scenes with audience applause and laughter, drumrolls and an original Mr Memory theme bringing the location to life. Since the play is farcical, there is a lot of interplay between the actors and the sound for comedic affect.

The process of producing sound and music that immersed the audience into the time period was particularly enjoyable. This ranged from processing recorded dialogue to emulated radio broadcasts to writing music in the style of a 1930s soundtrack, utilising the tonal and harmonic conventions.
