Jellyfish

by Will Obson

Set in a decrepit and colourful apartment, a couple is invaded by a hybrid Jellyfish person who will not leave. As they try to cope with it, their inner insecurities and tensions are exposed. Through Jellyfish’s mere presence, their home is a display of their existential dread as they try to escape or get by with this reality.

Being an absurdist comedy, the play is littered with cartoony sound effects to complement the exaggerated and alienating presentation. These sound effects were timed with the non-verbal Jellyfish’s movements and actions, such as hits and punches, to accentuate the silliness of the play.

For the final act, haunting soundscapes and an ominous closing musical cue are used to signify the stark change in mood and atmosphere.
